Kano CJ Orders Release of 7 Inmates on Medical Grounds After Reviewing 82 Cases

The Chief Judge of Kano State, Justice Dije Abdu Aboki, has ordered the release of seven inmates on medical grounds after reviewing the cases of 82 awaiting-trial persons in the state’s custodial centres.

The exercise was conducted at the Kurmawa and Goron Dutse custodial centres as part of efforts to reduce delays in the justice system and address prolonged detention.

The Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Kano Command, Musbahu Nassarawa, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday.

Nassarawa said some of the inmates whose cases were reviewed had spent years in custody without formal charges. He said Justice Aboki ordered the immediate release of seven inmates after considering their medical conditions and other circumstances surrounding their continued detention.

The Chief Judge stressed the importance of ensuring that justice is administered fairly and without unnecessary delays, particularly for people awaiting trial.

The Controller of Corrections in Kano, Ahmed Lakpene, urged the released inmates to use their freedom responsibly, obey the law and avoid actions that could result in further legal problems. He also described jail delivery exercises as important tools for reducing overcrowding and improving access to justice.

The exercise brought together key justice-sector officials, including the Chief Registrar of the High Court, Director of Public Prosecutions, representatives of the Commissioner of Police, Legal Aid lawyers and other stakeholders.

The Nigerian Correctional Service said it would continue to collaborate with the judiciary and other relevant institutions to promote timely trials, reduce overcrowding in custodial centres and safeguard the rights of inmates.
