More than 20 people have reportedly been killed after suspected gunmen attacked Binper community in Bwai District of Mangu Local Government Area, Plateau State.
The attackers reportedly invaded the community around midnight and continued into the early hours of Tuesday, moving from house to house and attacking residents while they slept.
The assault comes less than a week after three people were killed amid rising tensions between Fulani and Mwaghavul communities in the area. The two groups have traded accusations of arson as tensions continue to simmer.
National President of the Mwaghavul Development Association (MDA), Bulus Dabit, said the attackers arrived in large numbers and were armed with sophisticated weapons. He alleged that they forced their way into homes before attacking residents.
Dabit said more than 20 people had been confirmed dead as of Tuesday morning, while several others sustained injuries. He added that some residents were still unaccounted for, raising fears that the casualty figure could increase.
“The attackers in their numbers and with sophisticated weapons, moved from house to house, forcing their way in and attacking residents in their sleep, resulting in the casualty of those killed and others wounded,” Dabit said.
Plateau State Police Command spokesperson, SP Alfred Alabo, confirmed that an attack had occurred in the area but said he could not provide further details because security personnel were still conducting operations. He added that the command had yet to complete its assessment of the situation.
The latest violence has heightened concerns over renewed attacks in parts of Plateau State, where disputes between communities have repeatedly triggered deadly clashes and displacement.
