More than 40 people are feared dead after a boat carrying passengers to their farms capsized in Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The boat overturned while travelling across a waterway in the area, according to local reports. Many of those on board were reportedly children, although authorities were still working to establish the exact number of victims.
Residents said the passengers were travelling for farming activities when the boat capsized. The incident has left families searching for information about relatives who remain missing.
Rescue and recovery efforts are currently underway, with local volunteers and authorities involved in the operation. Teams have been searching the waterway for survivors and recovering victims as the scale of the tragedy becomes clearer.
The reported high number of casualties has also renewed concerns about safety standards on Nigeria’s inland waterways. Overloaded boats, inadequate safety equipment and limited access to life jackets have remained concerns in several waterway communities.
For families affected by the Sokoto boat accident, the immediate focus remains on finding missing passengers and recovering those who died. Residents are also awaiting further information from authorities as the search operation continues.
The final death toll has yet to be confirmed. Authorities are expected to release an official casualty figure after the rescue and recovery operation is completed.
