Wande Coal Rejects Claim Don Jazzy Made Him Successful: ‘It Was Two Talented People’

Nigerian singer Wande Coal has pushed back against the idea that his music career was built solely by his former label boss, Don Jazzy, saying their success came from a partnership between two talented people.

Speaking during an interview with Channels Television, the singer credited God as the ultimate reason for his success while acknowledging the role he and Don Jazzy played in building his early career.

Wande Coal said it was inaccurate to attribute his breakthrough to Don Jazzy alone, stressing that their working relationship was based on combining their individual talents.

“God is the reason for my success. I give all the credits to him because he was the one who brought me out and made me successful.”

The singer added that while some people believe Don Jazzy discovered him and single-handedly made him successful, he sees their story differently.

“Some people say it was Don Jazzy that brought me out but I feel like it was just two talented people working together to achieve success. So, it’s not by one man. It’s God,” he said.

Wande Coal was discovered by Don Jazzy and D’banj in 2006 after the duo watched him perform at a University of Lagos campus event. He was reportedly signed to their Mo’ Hits label shortly after the encounter.

His profile grew rapidly after he featured prominently on Mo’ Hits’ 2007 compilation album, Curriculum Vitae. He later cemented his place in Nigeria’s music industry with his debut album, Mushin 2 Mo’Hits, released in 2009.

Following the 2012 split between Don Jazzy and D’banj, Wande Coal moved to Don Jazzy’s newly established Mavin Records. He left the label in 2013 and subsequently launched his own imprint, Black Diamond Entertainment.
