Kano Rally: IPC Condemns Attack on Journalists Returning From APC Event

The International Press Centre’s Safety and Protection of Journalists (IPC-SPJ) Hub has condemned an attack on journalists returning from an All Progressives Congress (APC) rally in Kano State.**

The incident occurred on Saturday, September 5, 2026, after journalists covered a Tinubu Support Group rally at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano.

In a statement issued on Monday and signed by its Press Freedom Officer, Melody Akinjiyan, the IPC-SPJ Hub said a vehicle conveying journalists from several media organisations was attacked by hoodlums after the political event.

The affected journalists included four staff members of Radio Nigeria’s Pyramid FM, as well as journalists from Guarantee Radio and Daily Trust.

According to the Hub, the attackers repeatedly struck the vehicle as the journalists travelled away from the rally venue. The driver reportedly sustained injuries, while some journalists were hit by broken glass after the vehicle was damaged.

The IPC-SPJ Hub described the incident as a serious concern, particularly because a Radio Nigeria Pyramid FM vehicle was damaged during the attack.

Executive Director of the International Press Centre, Lanre Arogundade, said the incident posed a threat to press freedom and the safety of journalists covering political activities.

“The campaigns and rally just recently started, and journalists should not be subject to any form of attack at this time, when political activities are gradually increasing ahead of the general elections,” Arogundade said.

The Hub called on security agencies to strengthen measures for protecting journalists covering political rallies and other electoral activities, particularly at large gatherings where safety risks may be heightened.

It also advised media organisations and journalists covering the 2027 electoral process to conduct security assessments and remain vigilant while reporting political events.

The IPC-SPJ Hub said journalists must be able to carry out their professional duties without intimidation or violence as political activities intensify ahead of the general elections.
