Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) has renewed its commitment to deeper collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), with a focus on improving academic research, professional training and service delivery in the financial sector.
The Department of Banking and Finance made the commitment during a recent visit by university officials to the CBN Abeokuta Branch. The engagement was aimed at exposing academic staff to developments in Nigeria’s fast-changing financial system while creating opportunities for stronger university-industry partnerships.
The delegation was led by the Director of the OOU Business School, Professor Bamidele Ilo. Other members included the Head of the Department of Banking and Finance, Dr James Obadeyemi; OOU ASUU Chairman, Dr Ganiyu Yinusa; Dr T. O. Agbatogun; Dr S. K. Belau; Mr O. E. Olowofela; Dr R. A. Folami; Dr M. E. Ariyibi; and Dr O. Babalola.
The team was received by the CBN Abeokuta Branch Controller, Mr Malik Ademola, alongside members of the branch management team. Discussions centred on ways both institutions could sustain engagement and improve knowledge exchange between academia and the financial industry.
Professor Ilo said stronger links between universities and financial-sector institutions were important to ensuring that teaching and research remained relevant to changes in the economy and banking system.
He said the partnership could create opportunities for research collaboration, policy dialogue, knowledge sharing, staff development, guest lectures, seminars and joint publications, among other academic and professional initiatives.
Ilo added that continued interaction with the CBN would help narrow the gap between classroom theory and professional practice while giving lecturers and students greater exposure to real-world developments in banking and finance.
The university said the meeting also provided a foundation for further cooperation in financial-sector research, capacity building and professional development. Both institutions reportedly acknowledged the value of maintaining regular engagement.
OOU said the initiative reflects its broader commitment to strategic partnerships with major institutions whose expertise can strengthen its teaching, research and community-development responsibilities while contributing to the growth of Nigeria’s financial system.
