Nnamdi Azikiwe University ASUU Begins Indefinite Strike Over Unpaid August Salary

Academic activities at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka, face disruption after the institution’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) declared an indefinite strike over the alleged non-payment of the complete August 2026 salary to its members.

The ASUU-NAU branch announced the decision after its congress meeting on Monday, where members resolved to immediately withdraw both academic and administrative services under the union’s “no pay, no work” policy.

The action, the union said, followed a standing resolution of the ASUU National Executive Council, which empowers branches to withdraw their services when members’ salaries are not paid after the third day of a new month.

In a statement signed by the branch chairman, Innocent Nnubia, and secretary, Osita Nnajiofor, the union expressed frustration over what it described as repeated experiences of incomplete salary payments.

“Today is 7th September 2026 and the University has not paid complete salary for the month of August to our members,” the statement said.

“This makes it more than three times that our members are having this ugly and frustrating experience. The sole reason for this action is the non-payment of the complete salary of August 2026.”

The congress subsequently directed all members of the union to immediately withdraw their academic and administrative services, insisting that the strike would continue until every affected member receives their complete August salary.

ASUU-NAU also appealed to the university management and the institution’s Visitor, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to intervene urgently and ensure the outstanding salaries are fully paid.

The union warned that the recurring delays and incomplete payments must be addressed to prevent a repeat of the situation, as students and other members of the university community now face uncertainty over how long the industrial action could last.
