Okigwe Assault: Police Arrest Two Suspects After Viral Video Sparks Outrage

Two suspects have been arrested following public outrage over a viral video showing the alleged assault of a young woman and her brother in Okigwe, Imo State.

The siblings were reportedly travelling towards Abia State University when they were allegedly attacked by armed men in Okigwe.

The Imo State Police Command has clarified that the men seen in the viral footage are not police officers. The command identified them as personnel of the Imo State Vigilante Organisation.

The suspects were identified as Ejiogu Nchekwube and Caleb Onyebuchi. Police said both men had been arrested and were being detained at the Okigwe Divisional Police Headquarters while investigations continue.

The Abia State Police Command also weighed in on the incident, clarifying that Okigwe falls outside its jurisdiction. It urged members of the public to refrain from circulating unverified information about the case.

Authorities said the investigation would establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault and determine the extent of responsibility of those involved.

The Imo State Police Command added that anyone found culpable would face appropriate action in accordance with the law.

As investigations continue, the arrests are expected to shed more light on what happened to the siblings and the circumstances captured in the viral video.
