NDC Condemns Obstruction of Peter Obi’s Visit to Yelwata, Benue

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned the reported obstruction of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, from accessing Yelwata community in Benue State, where he planned to visit families affected by recent killings.

The party alleged that suspected thugs blocked Obi’s convoy on Tuesday and prevented him from entering the community, where more than 270 people were reportedly killed.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the NDC alleged that the group blocking the convoy was led by an aide to Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia.

The party described the incident as troubling, saying Obi’s visit was intended to enable him mourn with affected families, offer solidarity and listen to residents impacted by the violence.

Obi said he arrived in Benue at about 9 a.m. with the intention of visiting victims and families affected by the killings in Yelwata. He alleged that his convoy was stopped from proceeding by people chanting, “Peter Obi, go back.”

The NDC presidential candidate maintained that his visit was not politically motivated but was aimed at sympathising with families who had lost loved ones.

“I came to Benue not for politics but to mourn with our people, to listen to families who have lost loved ones, and to offer our solidarity,” he was quoted as saying.

The NDC said Benue residents and Nigerians generally deserved to live in peace, travel safely and cultivate their farms without fear.

The party called on the Benue State Government and relevant security agencies to investigate the reported incident, identify those responsible and ensure adequate protection for citizens and political leaders visiting communities affected by violence.

Although access to Yelwata was reportedly denied, the party said its thoughts and prayers remained with the victims, their families and the wider community.

The NDC reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the protection of lives and the safety of Nigerians across the country.
