Cybercrime Costs Africa $3bn as Nigerian Businesses Face Growing Online Security Threats

Cybercrime is becoming a major business risk across Africa, with losses estimated at about $3 billion since 2019, raising fresh concerns over the security of Nigeria’s rapidly expanding digital economy.

A new report highlighted in Nigeria has put the growing cost of cybercrime in focus, urging businesses to move cybersecurity higher up their corporate priorities. The threat is no longer limited to major banks and technology companies, as more businesses rely on digital systems to operate.

Companies using online payment platforms, customer databases, e-commerce services and electronic communication can all become targets. In Nigeria, potential threats include financial fraud, data theft, ransomware, compromised accounts and attacks that disrupt digital services.

The risks are increasing as businesses shift more of their operations online. A successful cyberattack can result in direct financial losses while also exposing sensitive customer information, interrupting operations and damaging a company’s reputation.

The growing threat is also changing the way businesses are being advised to approach cybersecurity. Rather than treating cyber risk solely as an information technology issue, companies are increasingly being encouraged to make it part of wider financial and board-level decision-making.

That approach includes stronger safeguards for customer data, improved cybersecurity training for employees, tighter controls over financial transactions and regular testing of digital systems. Businesses may also need to review how quickly they can detect and recover from an attack.

Consumers remain an important part of the security chain. Even companies with strong internal systems can see their customers targeted through phishing messages, fake websites and stolen login credentials, making digital awareness increasingly important.

As Nigeria’s digital economy continues to grow, cybersecurity is becoming a core cost of doing business. The challenge for companies is not simply deciding whether to invest in protection, but determining how much cyber risk they are willing to accept and how much they need to spend to protect their operations and customers.
