Kidnapping Fears Return to Owerri West as Gunmen Target Residents, Farmers and Property Seekers

Fear has resurfaced in parts of Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State following reports of renewed kidnappings and violent attacks, with residents calling for sustained security operations across affected communities.

Communities reportedly affected include Ndegwu, Amakohia-Ubi, Irete, Orogwe, Ogbaku, Nekede and Avu. The renewed insecurity is said to have disrupted daily activities, with some farmers reportedly staying away from their farms and prospective property buyers becoming increasingly reluctant to inspect land.

One of the reported incidents occurred in Umukenekpu village, Ndegwu, where gunmen allegedly abducted a family along with other residents. A survivor reportedly said a four-month-old baby was among those taken. The Sun also reported that a ransom of N30 million was allegedly paid to secure their release, although the police have not confirmed the claim.

Another violent incident was reported in Umuekwune, Irete, where a man, his wife and a local vigilante were allegedly attacked while inspecting a property. The man and the vigilante were reportedly killed, while the woman sustained gunshot injuries.

The security concerns have also heightened anxiety in communities around the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, where previous incidents have involved students and residents. The latest reports have renewed fears over the safety of people living, studying and working in the area.

The Imo State Police Command says security agencies have been deployed to affected communities as part of efforts to restore calm and tackle the criminal activities. However, residents say temporary deployments will not be enough to address the problem.

They are calling for continuous surveillance, stronger patrols and the identification and dismantling of suspected criminal hideouts. Residents say such measures are necessary to allow farmers to return to their fields and restore confidence among people moving around the communities.

For now, the reported attacks are putting additional pressure on farming, property development and everyday life across parts of Owerri West. Residents are hoping sustained security operations will prevent the situation from escalating further.
