Sowore Joins Pro-Palestine Protest in New York, Condemns Gaza War

Nigerian activist and politician Omoyele Sowore has joined a pro-Palestine protest in New York, where demonstrators called for an end to the war in Gaza and demanded greater accountability over Israel’s military actions.

Sowore disclosed his participation in a post on his official X account on Thursday, as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited New York to address the 81st United Nations General Assembly.

“Yes, today in New York, I joined the Free Palestine protest. No justice, no peace! #FreePalestine!” Sowore wrote.

He also condemned what he described as human rights abuses against Palestinians and accused the Israeli government of committing genocide in Gaza.

“I condemn the genocide being committed by the state of Israel in Gaza,” Sowore said, adding that he joined the demonstration to make clear that Nigerians who participated stood for justice and human rights for Palestinians.

The protest was among several demonstrations held in New York during Netanyahu’s visit. Hundreds of people gathered outside the United Nations, with protesters carrying Palestinian flags and placards calling for an end to the war and opposing US military support for Israel.

Police arrested demonstrators during one of the protests outside the UN. Reuters initially reported at least 30 arrests, while later reports put the number above 100 as demonstrations continued.

Netanyahu addressed the General Assembly on Thursday and defended Israel’s actions, while several delegates walked out of the chamber as he began his speech.

Sowore’s participation adds a Nigerian voice to the international demonstrations that accompanied Netanyahu’s visit to New York, with protesters continuing to demand an end to the fighting in Gaza and accountability for alleged violations of international law.
