Olivier Giroud Hints at Retirement After Current Season as France Legend Turns 40

France and Lille striker Olivier Giroud has revealed that he will “very probably” retire from professional football at the end of the current season, bringing his celebrated career closer to its final chapter.

Giroud, who turns 40 on Wednesday, made the disclosure in an interview with French newspaper L’Equipe, saying he believes this season is likely to be his last as a player.

“As a player, I think it is very probably my last season,” Giroud said. “That’s why I’m making the most of every moment.”

The veteran forward leaves behind an outstanding international career with France, having scored 57 goals in 137 appearances for the national team. He became France’s record goalscorer during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar before Kylian Mbappe surpassed his tally earlier this year.

Giroud was a key member of the France team that won the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. He also featured prominently in the national side during their run to the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar.

His club career has also been marked by major honours. He won the French league title with Montpellier before moving to Italy, where he later helped AC Milan claim the Serie A title.

Giroud enjoyed perhaps his most notable European club triumph with Chelsea, winning the Champions League in 2021. He also lifted the FA Cup four times, including three victories during his spell with Arsenal.

The striker began his professional career with Grenoble in France’s second division in 2006 and went on to play for several of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Montpellier, Arsenal, Chelsea, AC Milan and now Lille.

Giroud made his final appearance for France in 2024. With his 40th birthday approaching and his current season potentially his last, the World Cup winner is now taking time to appreciate the closing stages of a remarkable playing career.
