Haaland Leads 14 Premier League Scorers During September International Break

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland led a group of 14 Premier League players who scored for their countries during the September international break.

The Norwegian forward found the net three times during the break, scoring twice in Norway’s 3-2 Nations League win over Denmark before adding another in their 2-1 defeat to Portugal.

Haaland, 26, has now scored 65 goals in 57 international appearances. His latest goals also took his Nations League tally to 22, making him the competition’s leading scorer since its introduction in 2018.

Arsenal striker Viktor Gyökeres and Newcastle United forward Yoane Wissa were the next highest scorers among Premier League players, with two goals each.

Gyökeres scored in Sweden’s victories over Romania and Poland, while Wissa found the net twice for the Democratic Republic of Congo during the international window.

Liverpool’s Alexander Isak also scored for Sweden in their 2-1 Nations League victory over Romania, while his club-mate Cody Gakpo scored a stoppage-time equaliser for the Netherlands against Germany.

The other Premier League players who scored during the break were Malick Yalcouyé of Brighton, Brentford’s Michael Kayode, Arsenal’s Christos Tzolis, Manchester United’s Bryan Mbeumo, Fulham’s Oscar Bobb, Aston Villa’s Nicolas Jackson, Bournemouth’s Rayan, Fulham’s Shea Charles and Sunderland’s Wilson Isidor.

Yalcouyé marked his Ivory Coast debut with a goal and won a penalty in a 2-0 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying victory over Ghana. Kayode also scored on his Italy debut in a 4-1 win over Turkey.

Isidor produced one of the late highlights of the break, scoring Haiti’s winning goal in the eighth minute of stoppage time during their 3-2 CONCACAF Nations League victory over Trinidad and Tobago. He also provided two assists.

The Premier League also highlighted Liverpool defender Jeremy Jacquet, who kept a clean sheet on his France debut in a 1-0 victory over Belgium. His Liverpool team-mate Bradley Barcola played 77 minutes in the same match.

However, the international break also brought injury concerns for several Premier League clubs. Liverpool’s Isak and Gakpo, Arsenal’s Kai Havertz and Manchester United’s Patrick Dorgu were among the players reported to have picked up injuries while on international duty.

The 16-day international break ends on October 6, with Premier League fixtures scheduled to resume on October 10.
