Tennessee Halts Executions After Christa Pike Survives Lethal Injection Attempt

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has halted the state’s remaining scheduled execution for 2026 and ordered a third-party review after officials failed to execute death-row inmate Christa Pike on Wednesday night.

Pike, 50, remained alive after receiving two doses of pentobarbital during the lethal injection procedure at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville. Media witnesses reported that she was still breathing and audibly snoring more than an hour after the procedure began.

The Tennessee Department of Correction said it followed every step of the state’s established execution protocol and confirmed that Pike was later transported to an off-site medical facility. The department has not publicly explained why the procedure failed.

Pike had been scheduled to become the first woman executed in Tennessee in more than 200 years. She was sentenced to death for the 1995 killing of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, a crime she committed when she was 18.

The execution was delayed for hours on Wednesday as courts considered last-minute legal challenges. After the lethal injection began, witnesses described periods when the blinds separating them from the execution chamber were closed, leaving them unable to observe what was happening.

Pike’s attorneys have raised concerns about possible difficulties accessing her veins and the condition of the pentobarbital used in the procedure. They said Pike was taken to a hospital but that they had not initially been informed about her medical condition. Those claims have not been independently established, while state officials maintain that the approved execution protocol was followed.

Governor Lee ordered a comprehensive, independent review to determine what happened and called off Tennessee’s remaining scheduled execution for the year. It is the second time during his tenure that Lee has paused executions pending a review of the state’s procedures.

The incident has renewed scrutiny of Tennessee’s lethal-injection procedures and the broader use of capital punishment. The state had already faced another halted execution attempt earlier in 2026, adding to questions about the reliability of its execution process.

Pike remains alive and was receiving medical treatment following the failed procedure, but details about her condition and the precise cause of the failure had not been publicly established as of Thursday.
