Gunmen have reportedly killed a security operative travelling to his duty post along the Kwi-Beco road in Plateau State, raising fresh concerns about the safety of residents and security personnel in the area.
The incident occurred at about 7 p.m. on Thursday around Kwi, between Riyom and Barkin Ladi Local Government Areas, according to local sources cited in reports.
The security operative was reportedly riding a motorcycle to his duty post in the Chit area of Heipang when he was attacked and killed by the assailants.
Sources said the attackers also fled with the motorcycle after the killing.
Rwang Tengwong, spokesman for the Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM), confirmed the incident and described it as disturbing.
Tengwong expressed concern that security personnel assigned to protect communities were themselves vulnerable to attacks. He said the killing raised serious questions about the safety of civilians in the affected areas.
The BYM spokesman condemned the attack and called for urgent measures to address the security challenges facing communities in the area.
As of press time, efforts to reach security operatives for official confirmation of the incident had been unsuccessful. The circumstances surrounding the killing and the identity of the attackers had not been officially established in the report.
