Senator Muhammad Adamu Aliero has called for urgent Federal Government intervention following the reported displacement of residents in Jega and Maiyama Local Government Areas of Kebbi State amid an influx of bandits allegedly fleeing military operations in neighbouring Zamfara and Sokoto states.
Aliero, who represents Kebbi Central Senatorial District, made the appeal in a motion on matters of urgent national importance before the Senate, warning that the reported movement of armed groups into Kebbi had created fresh security threats for local communities.
According to the senator, intensified military operations in the neighbouring states have reportedly pushed surviving bandits into communities in Kebbi, exposing residents to intimidation, destruction of property and loss of lives.
The motion identified several affected communities, including Jan Dutsi, Agada, Kimba, Alelu, Tanja, Jadadi, Bawanka, Kaba, Zugu, Tafkin Kada and Gehuru.
Aliero said the deteriorating security situation had forced many residents to flee their homes and seek refuge in the headquarters of Jega, Aliero and Maiyama local government areas.
He also raised concerns over the reported killing of three employees of Hi-Tech, the company handling the Badagry–Sokoto Superhighway project, amid the security crisis.
While acknowledging the Kebbi State Government’s efforts to provide shelter, food and other assistance to displaced residents, the senator said the scale of the humanitarian situation required additional support from the Federal Government.
He urged the government to equip security agencies with adequate personnel, weapons and logistical resources to contain the attacks, protect vulnerable communities and restore security across the affected areas.
The motion also called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to assess the needs of displaced residents and provide essential relief, including food, clean water, temporary shelter and medical supplies.
Aliero further urged the federal and state governments to coordinate their security and humanitarian responses and facilitate the safe return of displaced residents once their communities are secure.
