A 27-year-old man has been arrested in Bauchi State for allegedly poisoning a commercial motorcyclist in an attempt to steal his motorcycle, while police are searching for a second suspect who escaped.
The Bauchi State Police Command identified the arrested suspect as Isiyaka Badamasi, who reportedly resides in the Na’ibawa area of Kano State. His alleged accomplice, Ma’aruf Sani, also from the same area, remains at large.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, disclosed the incident in a statement issued on Thursday, saying the suspects allegedly approached a 21-year-old commercial motorcyclist from the Yelwa Tudun area of Bauchi and offered him a sweet containing a harmful substance.
According to the police, the motorcyclist became intoxicated after eating the sweet, leaving him vulnerable to the suspects’ alleged plan to take his Bajaj Boxer motorcycle.
However, the victim reportedly sensed danger and raised the alarm, attracting members of the public who helped apprehend Badamasi. Sani allegedly fled the scene before he could be arrested.
The injured motorcyclist was taken to Gamuwa Primary Health Care Centre for treatment and remains on admission, although he is responding to medical care, the police said.
Commissioner of Police Sani-Omolori Aliyu has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation. Police said efforts were ongoing to locate and arrest the fleeing suspect.
The command urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property across Bauchi State.
