Fulham head coach Alvaro Arbeloa has played down concerns about his job security as he prepares his struggling side for Saturday’s Premier League clash against Hull City, insisting that the club’s fortunes matter more than his personal future.
Speaking ahead of the encounter, Arbeloa said preparations had continued as normal despite speculation about his position. The former Liverpool defender stressed that his attention remained on helping the club and his players turn their fortunes around.
The Spanish manager is under mounting pressure after Fulham collected just two points from their opening six league matches, recording two draws and four defeats. Another setback at Craven Cottage could intensify calls for a change in the dugout as the club searches for its first league victory of the season.
“It is not about me, it is about the club, the players and the supporters,” Arbeloa said, as reported by BBC Sport. “It is not about my future. As I said before, it is about the club and my players.”
Fulham came close to ending their winless run against Ipswich Town last weekend after Ryan Sessegnon put them ahead. However, two late goals from their opponents left Arbeloa’s side empty-handed once again. They had also missed out on a potential victory against Manchester United before the international break after Matheus Cunha scored a deflected late goal.
Despite the disappointing results, Arbeloa believes his players are determined to reward the supporters who have continued backing the team. He said the squad understood the importance of securing a victory and giving fans something to celebrate.
The manager also pointed to Fulham’s performances against Ipswich, Manchester United and Liverpool as evidence that his team could compete with their opponents. Fulham held Liverpool to a goalless draw at Anfield, but Arbeloa admitted that his players needed to maintain their performance levels throughout matches rather than allowing late setbacks to cost them points.
“We need to try to keep that level for 90 minutes; that is important,” he said, adding that he had been encouraged by the players’ focus and commitment during training ahead of the Hull encounter.
Arbeloa joined Fulham in the summer on a three-year contract, replacing Marco Silva after a brief spell as Real Madrid’s interim head coach. Although Fulham have reached the last 16 of the Carabao Cup, their poor league start has placed greater importance on Saturday’s match, with a positive result offering the manager and his players an opportunity to ease the pressure before their next league fixture against Coventry City.
