One person has been confirmed dead after a two-storey building under construction collapsed in the Fadeyi area of Lagos State in the early hours of Friday, with several others feared trapped beneath the debris.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Friday by its Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu.
According to the agency, it received a distress call about the collapse at 12:10 a.m., prompting the immediate activation of its Cobra Response Team from the Onipanu Base.
The response team arrived at the scene at 12:12 a.m. and discovered that the two-storey structure, which was still under construction, had collapsed.
Oke-Osanyintolu said preliminary observations suggested that construction workers might have been trapped beneath the rubble, prompting emergency responders to begin search and rescue operations.
Rescue teams immediately commenced efforts to locate and evacuate victims while implementing safety measures to protect both those potentially trapped and the personnel involved in the operation.
The agency said responders were working to determine whether more people remained beneath the debris.
