Barcelona, Real Madrid Prepare for El Clasico as Mourinho Faces Tactical Test

Barcelona will head into Sunday’s El Clasico hoping to strengthen their advantage over arch-rivals Real Madrid, but their preparations have been complicated by a recent defeat and concerns over defensive injuries.

The La Liga leaders had been looking forward to the meeting at Camp Nou as an opportunity to extend their lead over Madrid to nine points. However, Barcelona suffered their first defeat of the season against Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, raising fresh questions about their defensive stability.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, have won four consecutive matches, including a convincing victory over RB Leipzig on Wednesday, as Jose Mourinho’s side continue to show signs of improvement.

Despite Madrid’s recent form, Barcelona remain in a strong position under Hansi Flick. The return of Brazilian winger Raphinha and the impressive performances of teenage sensation Lamine Yamal offer the Catalan club hope of maintaining their advantage.

El Clasico has often proved decisive in shaping the direction of both clubs’ seasons. Last season, Madrid’s victory in the first meeting against Barcelona was followed by growing tensions, including Vinicius Junior’s reaction to being substituted. The situation contributed to instability during Xabi Alonso’s tenure, with the coach eventually dismissed.

Madrid subsequently struggled under replacement Alvaro Arbeloa and finished a second consecutive season without a major trophy, while Barcelona retained the Spanish league title comfortably.

Vinicius will miss Sunday’s encounter through suspension. According to Spanish newspaper AS, his four-match ban has been viewed by some within Madrid as an opportunity rather than a setback.

Mourinho has generally sought to accommodate his available star players, although balancing attacking quality with defensive organisation has presented challenges. The absence of Vinicius could give the coach greater flexibility, with teenage signing Yan Diomande among the possible options.

Diomande, who reportedly cost a club-record €140 million, has shown defensive discipline while improving his attacking contribution. Mourinho could also consider adding another midfielder to disrupt Barcelona’s possession-based approach.

However, the Madrid coach played down the importance of recent form ahead of the fixture, insisting that confidence was not a decisive factor in Clasico encounters.

“It’s not a game like the others,” Mourinho said, while also complaining that his team would have 24 hours less rest than Barcelona.
Barcelona face defensive concerns
Barcelona have their own selection problems, particularly in defence. Eric Garcia and Andreas Christensen are sidelined, while Jules Kounde remains a doubt. Midfielder Dani Olmo is also unavailable through injury.

The Catalans conceded four goals against PSG, exposing weaknesses in their defence that have persisted during Flick’s time in charge. Their high defensive line and mistakes in possession have continued to leave them vulnerable against opponents capable of exploiting space.

Flick acknowledged that his players made too many errors against the French side, particularly when retaining possession.

He suggested fatigue could have contributed to the mistakes after a demanding run of matches and said the team would need to analyse their performance.

Despite the setback, Barcelona’s attacking form remains impressive. They have scored at least twice in every match this season and have averaged more than four goals per game.

Raphinha has emerged as their leading scorer, with 12 league goals, three more than Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe. Yamal follows with eight goals.

Both Mbappe and Yamal are also hoping to win the Ballon d’Or, with the award ceremony scheduled for Monday. However, a victory in Sunday’s Clasico would represent a significant achievement for either club.

For Barcelona, the objective is to preserve their domestic unbeaten run and strengthen their position at the top of La Liga. For Madrid, victory would offer a chance to reduce the gap and demonstrate that Mourinho’s team are ready to challenge their rivals.
