APC Shifts 2027 Presidential Primary to May 23, Releases New Timetable for Nationwide Primaries

Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), has revised its 2027 election timetable, pushing its presidential primary to May 23 as part of a broader schedule adjustment ahead of the general elections.

The announcement followed a meeting of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) in Abuja, where officials said the changes were necessary to align with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Electoral Act 2026, and updated guidelines issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Under the new schedule, the sale of expression of interest and nomination forms will begin on April 25 and close on May 2, while submission of completed forms is fixed for May 4. Party officials stressed that all positions remain open to eligible members, dismissing speculation about restricted access to forms.

Screening of aspirants across all categories—from state assemblies to the presidency—will take place between May 6 and May 9, with presidential aspirants screened on the final day. Results of the screening process are expected to be published on May 11.

The primary elections will follow a staggered sequence. House of Representatives primaries are scheduled for May 15, Senate primaries on May 18, and State House of Assembly contests on May 20. Governorship primaries will be held on May 21, culminating in the presidential primary on May 23.

Party spokesperson Duro Meseko said the APC will adopt both direct and consensus methods for selecting candidates, in line with legal provisions. However, he made it clear that consensus candidacy must have the backing of all aspirants, or it will automatically revert to direct primaries.

In addition to the national timetable, the party also outlined plans to resolve internal leadership issues in Zamfara State. Ward, local government, and state congresses are expected to begin on April 28 and conclude by May 3, including an appeals process.

The APC further confirmed that its updated membership register, including new entrants, has been transmitted to INEC, signaling its readiness for the primaries.

With the revised timetable now in place, the party is positioning itself for what is expected to be a highly competitive build-up to the 2027 general elections, where internal cohesion and transparent processes will likely shape its chances at the polls.
