Lionel Messi kept Argentina’s FIFA World Cup title defence alive with a remarkable late comeback as the reigning champions fought back from two goals down to defeat Egypt 3-2 and book a place in the quarter-finals.

Argentina looked set for a shock exit after Egypt produced a fearless display in Atlanta. Yasser Ibrahim opened the scoring before Mostafa Ziko doubled the Pharaohs’ advantage, leaving Lionel Scaloni’s side on the brink of elimination. The difficult afternoon became even worse for Messi after the Argentine captain had an early penalty saved.

Despite dominating possession for long periods, Argentina struggled to break down an inspired Egyptian side, with goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir producing several outstanding saves. He denied Messi from the penalty spot before making impressive stops to keep out Alexis Mac Allister and Julián Álvarez.

Egypt thought they had extended their lead even further midway through the second half when Ziko found the net following a swift counterattack. However, the goal was ruled out after a VAR review identified a foul earlier in the move, a decision that sparked protests from the Egyptian bench.

The holders finally found a way back into the contest with just over 10 minutes remaining. Cristian Romero powered home a header to reduce the deficit and inject fresh belief into the Argentine side.

Messi then redeemed himself in spectacular fashion, smashing home the equaliser from Gonzalo Montiel’s pass to score his eighth goal of the tournament and extend his scoring streak to nine consecutive World Cup matches. Although Shobeir got a hand to the effort, the ball crashed in off the crossbar.

Argentina completed the stunning turnaround deep into stoppage time when Enzo Fernández rose highest to head home Lautaro Martínez’s cross, sealing an unforgettable 3-2 victory. Messi was visibly emotional after the final whistle as he embraced his teammates, while Egypt were left frustrated following several controversial officiating decisions, including the disallowed goal and a red card shown to a member of their coaching staff.

The dramatic win sends Argentina into the quarter-finals, where they will face either Colombia or Switzerland as they continue their quest to retain the World Cup trophy.
