Calabar: Police Recover Body of Correctional Officer from Drainage Channel

The body of a Deputy Superintendent of Correctional Service, DSC Michael Apepende, has been recovered from a drainage channel in Calabar, Cross River State.

The remains of the Nigerian Correctional Service personnel were found at about 10:30am on Friday along Barrack Road, near the Nigerian Chronicle House.

Officers from the Akim Division of the Cross River State Police Command responded after receiving information about the discovery. They subsequently retrieved the body from the drainage channel.

Police authorities confirmed that the deceased was a serving officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service, although details surrounding how he died remain unclear.

Apepende’s remains have since been deposited at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, where an autopsy is expected to establish the cause and circumstances of his death.

The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, said an investigation had commenced into the incident.

Akata said the command would provide additional information as the investigation progresses, while appealing to members of the public to refrain from speculation until the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death are established.

The recovery has raised questions about what may have happened to the correctional officer before his body was found. Police investigators are expected to rely on the autopsy and other available evidence to determine the sequence of events.
