Chelsea’s Xabi Alonso Hints at Mike Penders Chance as Robert Sanchez Faces Luton Test

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has refused to rule out giving goalkeeper Mike Penders a chance when the Blues face Luton Town in the second round of the Carabao Cup on Thursday.

Robert Sanchez remains Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper, but his display in Monday’s 3-2 Premier League win over Fulham has renewed questions over his place. The Spaniard was beaten at his near post by Josh King before his save from the same attack fell straight to Gonzalo Garcia, who scored Fulham’s second goal.

Sanchez has faced criticism from Chelsea supporters over his performances, increasing speculation that Alonso could use the cup fixture to hand Penders his opportunity. The young goalkeeper is part of the squad for the match at Stamford Bridge.

Alonso confirmed that Penders is in contention but declined to reveal whether he will start. The Chelsea boss said he wanted his players to hear team selections directly from him rather than discover them through media reports.

“Penders is part of the squad, so he has an opportunity. We will decide and then I am giving the team tomorrow to the players, so I prefer to respect that they know first,” Alonso said.

A change in goal would give Penders valuable competitive experience and could also provide Alonso with a chance to assess his options behind Sanchez. However, the manager has yet to indicate that the Spaniard has lost his position as Chelsea’s No. 1.

Chelsea will also be without Moises Caicedo and Marco Palestra for the Luton game. Both players missed the opening Premier League fixture against Fulham and remain unavailable for the cup tie.

Caicedo could return for Chelsea’s weekend Premier League meeting with Brighton, according to Alonso, while Palestra’s situation remains less certain and will require further assessment.

The Luton fixture therefore offers Alonso an opportunity to rotate his squad while managing injuries — and Chelsea supporters will be watching closely to see whether Penders gets his chance between the posts.
