Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has sworn in 68 new Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) at a ceremony marking the commencement of the 2026/2027 legal year.

The Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) reported the development on Monday, sharing videos and photographs from the ceremony on its official X account.

Speaking at the Supreme Court Complex in Abuja, Kekere-Ekun urged judicial officers to embrace reforms aimed at speeding up the administration of justice, citing the growing number of cases before Nigerian courts.

She also encouraged judges to adopt technology to improve the handling and determination of cases, stressing the need for more efficient judicial processes.

Reviewing the judiciary’s performance during the year under review, the CJN disclosed that more than 2,000 cases were filed at the Supreme Court, with civil matters accounting for the majority.

Kekere-Ekun also cautioned legal practitioners against making public statements that discredit court judgments through the media, highlighting the importance of responsible engagement with judicial decisions.

The conferment of the SAN rank recognises senior legal practitioners who have met the requirements for the prestigious title. The 68 appointees include 67 advocates listed in order of seniority at the Bar and one successful academic applicant, Professor Nnamdi Onyeka Obiaraeri.
