Health authorities in Cross River State have isolated a Chinese national at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) over suspected COVID-19 infection, prompting an immediate public health response and renewed surveillance efforts.

The state government confirmed that the patient is currently receiving medical attention under strict isolation protocols while samples and clinical assessments are being carried out.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Henry Egbe Ayuk, disclosed the development in Calabar on Tuesday, saying the case was swiftly escalated after symptoms were first noticed at a clinic in Akamkpa Local Government Area.

According to him, the patient arrived in Nigeria through Lagos on March 17, 2026, before travelling to Calabar en route to a factory site in Akamkpa, where health concerns began to emerge.

He explained that once the symptoms were detected, the individual was immediately referred to UCTH, where isolation procedures were activated without delay.

“We have activated all necessary procedures, including contact tracing and isolation, to prevent further spread,” Dr. Ayuk said, adding that the state is working closely with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

The commissioner reassured residents that there is no cause for panic, stressing that the situation is under control and being closely monitored by health authorities.

The World Health Organization (WHO) in Cross River, alongside the State Epidemiology Unit, also confirmed that surveillance systems have been strengthened to track potential contacts and prevent further transmission.

Health officials noted that COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, can present with symptoms such as fever, cough, fatigue, and breathing difficulties, ranging from mild to severe cases.

They urged residents to remain vigilant and continue observing preventive health measures, including proper hand hygiene, use of face masks where necessary, vaccination, and avoiding close contact with individuals showing symptoms.

Authorities further emphasised that early detection, rapid response, and strict isolation remain the most effective tools in preventing any possible outbreak.
