Afrobeats superstar Davido has come under heavy criticism on social media after attacking rapper Erigga over a post celebrating musicians who built their careers without financial support from wealthy families.
The controversy began after Erigga posted on X on Wednesday, praising artistes who had to work for every dollar they earned without the advantage of family wealth. “Shoutout to all the musicians who don’t come from family money and have to grind for every single dollar they earn,” the rapper wrote.
Davido, who was born into a wealthy family, quoted the post and appeared to take issue with the message. He defended musicians who came from privileged backgrounds before directing an insult at Erigga, writing in Pidgin: “No be we say make your pops no guard o. Shoutout to the ones that came from family money and still grind to the top. Comot here with that your useless motivation. Imbecile.”
The response quickly sparked reactions from social media users, many of whom argued that Erigga had not mentioned Davido or appeared to target him directly. Some accused the singer of being overly sensitive and turning a general message into a personal confrontation.
One user, @HonitelHQ, said Davido’s reaction suggested insecurity, arguing that Erigga was simply encouraging people who had built their careers without financial backing. Another user, @adelambo, similarly questioned why Davido responded when his name was not mentioned.
Other reactions were more critical of the singer’s repeated social media clashes. A fan identified as @BoiiSavi said Davido was sometimes too quick to engage in online drama and questioned why he had chosen to insult Erigga over what appeared to be a general statement.
The debate has since widened into a discussion about privilege and hard work in Nigeria’s music industry. While some users defended Davido by pointing out that coming from wealth does not mean an artiste did not work hard, others maintained that Erigga’s post was simply acknowledging the different challenges faced by musicians without financial advantages.
The latest clash adds to a series of social media controversies involving Davido, who has remained highly active in online exchanges with fellow entertainers and public figures. For now, neither Davido nor Erigga has indicated that the dispute will move beyond their social media exchange.
