Defence Minister Says Every Nigerian Should Undergo Military Training

Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.), has said every Nigerian should have the opportunity to undergo military training, arguing that the experience would build endurance, discipline and a deeper understanding of the sacrifices involved in protecting the country.

Musa made the statement during an interview on the African Leadership Podcast with Ken Giami, released on Monday. He said military training could give citizens a different perspective on life by exposing them to physical challenges and the demands faced by members of the Armed Forces.

“For me, I think it’s the best. If I have my way, every Nigerian should be able to go through military training,” Musa said. He explained that such training would help people understand hunger, exhaustion, sleep deprivation and the endurance required to continue working under difficult conditions.

The minister said the experience could also help Nigerians appreciate the sacrifices made by military personnel who operate in challenging environments to protect the country. He noted that soldiers often spend long periods away from their families while carrying out their duties.

Musa also called for greater public understanding of the military, saying troops should not be viewed simply through the lens of conflict. He said military personnel are also fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters who leave their families behind while serving in difficult conditions.

He further stressed the importance of teamwork, saying military training teaches people that they cannot operate effectively in isolation. According to him, working with others is essential because “no man is an island.”

On Nigeria’s security challenges, Musa said tackling insecurity requires both military and non-military approaches. He argued that issues such as access to food, healthcare, education, roads and other basic services are also connected to national security.

The Defence Minister also urged Nigerians to believe in the country and develop a stronger sense of patriotism. He said the military would continue working to promote peace and security across Nigeria.

Musa’s comments were framed as his view on the value of military training for citizens; the interview did not announce a new nationwide compulsory military training programme or provide details of an implementation plan.
