DSS Arrests Suspects Over Alleged Plot Targeting INEC Election Workers

The Department of State Services (DSS) has reportedly arrested suspects over an alleged plot targeting election workers, particularly members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

The disclosure was reportedly made by the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, during a meeting with commission staff in Enugu.

According to reports citing INEC’s Daily Bulletin, Amupitan said potential threats to the safety of the commission’s ad hoc personnel had been identified, prompting measures to address the risks.

He credited the DSS with uncovering the alleged plot and arresting those reportedly involved. The INEC chairman also said the suspects would face prosecution.

However, the reported remarks did not identify the suspects, specify where the alleged attack was planned or provide details about the nature and timing of the threat.

Amupitan said INEC was strengthening its security arrangements through collaboration with security agencies at both national and state levels to protect election personnel and support the conduct of the 2027 polls.

The commission is also planning to convene a security conference to address threats to voters, election officials and election materials as preparations for the general elections continue.

Beyond security concerns, Amupitan identified public distrust, voter apathy and the spread of misinformation as major challenges facing Nigeria’s electoral process.

The reported arrests have renewed attention on the safety of election workers, including NYSC members who are frequently deployed for electoral duties. Further details about the alleged plot, the suspects and the next steps in the case are still awaited from the relevant authorities.
