Farmer Loses Left Hand After Alleged Herdsman Attack in Adamawa

A farmer identified as Hammasumo Ali has lost his left hand after an alleged attack by a herdsman in the Nyashika area of Gumti Ward, Toungo Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

The incident occurred after Ali reportedly tried to stop a herdsman from allowing cattle to enter his farm and graze, according to Daniel Pogu Toungo, Secretary of Information for Toungo Local Government Area.

What began as a disagreement reportedly escalated into a physical confrontation. The herdsman allegedly attacked Ali with a machete, leaving him with severe injuries to his left hand.

Ali was subsequently taken to a hospital, where he is currently receiving medical treatment. The extent of his injuries resulted in the loss of the affected hand.

Following the incident, Toungo Local Government Chairman, Hajiya Hauwa Guruja, visited Ali at the hospital to sympathise with him over his condition.

Guruja appealed to residents of the area to remain calm and avoid actions that could further escalate tensions between farming and herding communities.

She urged residents to respect one another’s rights and settle disputes through dialogue rather than violence.

The incident adds to concerns over conflicts between farmers and herders in parts of Nigeria, where disputes over farmland, grazing and access to resources have sometimes resulted in violent confrontations.
