FCT Police Rescue Two Abandoned Babies in Kurudu, Gwagwalada

The FCT Police Command has rescued two abandoned babies found in separate incidents in Kurudu and Gwagwalada areas of Abuja.

The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday, September 4, 2026, saying both incidents were reported by concerned residents who heard the babies crying.

The first case occurred on Wednesday, September 2, when a Kurudu resident identified as Mr Innocent heard a baby crying around Obodo Street. He went to investigate and found a baby wrapped in cloth and abandoned inside a carton box.

Police officers from the Kurudu Division, working with personnel from the Juveniles and Women Care (JWC) Department, responded to the report and rescued the baby boy.

Adeh said the child was taken to a nearby hospital for medical assessment and was found to be in stable condition. After the necessary documentation, the baby was handed over to the Social Welfare Department for further care, while police continued efforts to determine how and why the child was abandoned.

The second incident was reported the same day in Gwagwalada, where another resident, Mr Ibrahim, heard a baby crying outside his gate. He reportedly found a baby girl who appeared to have been abandoned on the premises and, with the help of other community members, rescued the child before reporting the matter to the police.

The baby girl was taken to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital by officers from the JWC Department for medical examination and is currently receiving care pending her transfer to the Social Welfare Department. The police said investigations are ongoing in both cases.

The FCT Police Command commended Innocent, Ibrahim and other residents who acted quickly to save the children and alert the authorities. The command also appealed to anyone with information that could help identify the mothers or clarify the circumstances surrounding the abandonments to report to the nearest police station.
