Properties worth millions of naira have been destroyed following an early morning fire outbreak at Gezawa Market in Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State.
The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, Kabiru Jafaru, and made available to The PUNCH on Wednesday.
According to the statement, the fire occurred at about 5:15 a.m. on Monday, November 2, 2026, destroying four containers and seven temporary shops.
The Fire Service said it received a distress call from a resident, Ibrahim Sani, who reported the outbreak at the market.
“Upon receiving the distress call, our team promptly mobilised to the scene of the incident and successfully extinguished the fire, preventing it from spreading to other sections of the market,” the statement said.
It added that the fire affected one shop, four containers and seven temporary shops, all of which were completely burnt.
The Director of the Kano State Fire Service urged residents and traders to observe necessary fire safety precautions, particularly as the harmattan season approaches, to prevent similar incidents.
The latest outbreak comes just days after another early morning fire destroyed more than 100 buildings and structures at Kofar Ruwa Timber Market in Kano metropolis.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday, October 31, 2026, reportedly destroyed 75 permanent buildings and 35 temporary structures across different sections of the market.
The Kano State Fire Service has continued to urge traders and members of the public to remain vigilant and take preventive measures against fire outbreaks.
