Flooding has destroyed houses and farmlands in Pututa and several other communities in Lafiagi, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, leaving residents with significant property and agricultural losses.
The affected communities include Tswako, Likpata, Godangi and Ekko, according to a statement by the Deputy Chief Press Secretary to the Kwara State Governor, Mashood Abdulrafiu Agboola.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq visited the affected communities to sympathise with residents and assess the situation.
The governor said no lives were lost in the flooding, although several properties were destroyed.
“No life was lost, but properties were destroyed,” AbdulRazaq said.
He announced a ₦10 million emergency support package for residents of Pututa to provide food, drinking water and medicines. He also directed the Kwara State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to assess the extent of the damage and determine the additional needs of affected communities.
The flooding occurred amid a Federal Government flood alert issued on September 28, warning residents in 24 states, including Kwara, of possible flooding between September 27 and October 10, 2026. The advisory cited heavy rainfall, rising river levels, saturated soil and increased surface runoff as factors that could heighten flood risks.
Kwara was among the states with communities classified under the critical flood-risk category in the advisory. The state government said it would continue discussions with relevant Federal Government authorities over the dredging of the River Niger as part of efforts to address recurring flooding in affected areas.
“The government will continue to engage with the Federal Government on the dredging of the River Niger to find a lasting solution to the flooding,” the statement said
