Gunmen Kill Popular Comedian Aiza Nwosu, One Other in Awka, Anambra

Popular Anambra comedian and media personality Isaac Nwosu, widely known as Aiza Nwosu, has been shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Awka, the state capital, alongside another man whose identity has not been established.

The two victims were killed at separate locations during the attack on Sunday, August 30, 2026. Nwosu was reportedly attacked along S.M. Okeke Street in the Amaikwo area, while the second victim was shot along Capital City Road in Amaenyi.

Witnesses said the attackers, believed to be about three in number, were travelling in a silver-coloured Toyota Corolla. An eyewitness claimed the suspects followed Nwosu from his residence before reportedly blocking his vehicle and shooting him.

The same assailants allegedly drove away from the scene before attacking another man by the roadside. The victim was reportedly dispossessed of his belongings before the attackers fled. Their gunshots reportedly sent residents running for safety and heightened tension across the affected areas.

Although the motive remains unknown, some residents and eyewitnesses have suggested that the killings could be linked to cult-related activities. Police, however, have not confirmed that claim and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the attacks.

Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the killings in a statement on Monday. He said three unidentified suspects were believed to have carried out the attacks and that police patrol teams had been deployed to track them down.

Police recovered the bodies from both locations and took them to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead. Officers also recovered ₦7,550, a Moniepoint ATM card and a pair of slippers at the scenes, according to the police.

Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Ama, condemned the killings and ordered the case transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for a detailed investigation. The command has also increased patrols, surveillance and intelligence operations across Awka and surrounding communities.

Police appealed to residents, motorists, business owners and community leaders who may have information about the suspects or the vehicle used in the attacks to come forward. The command said such information would be treated confidentially and could help investigators identify and arrest those responsible.
