Heavy Rain Triggers Flooding Across Owerri as Imo Faces Fresh Flood Risk

Heavy rainfall has caused flooding in several parts of Owerri and neighbouring communities in Imo State, disrupting businesses, transportation and daily activities.

Several communities were affected after hours of torrential rain on Monday, with residents reporting rising floodwater on roads and inside homes and business premises.

In Federal Housing Estate, Umuguma, residents said floodwater entered houses and shops, while several vehicles became stranded as roads were overwhelmed by the downpour.

Areas around Ohaozara Street, near the back gate of Imo State University, were also affected, with residents reporting difficulties accessing the area because of the flooding.

In Emeabiam, roads and farmlands were reportedly submerged, leaving some residents with limited access in and out of the community.

The Owerri office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said it had received several distress calls from residents affected by the flooding.

The latest flooding comes amid a warning from the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) that Imo and 14 other states face a high risk of flooding through September 25.

Authorities have urged residents in flood-prone communities to take the warning seriously and relocate to safer areas where necessary.

Residents are also advised to avoid walking or driving through fast-moving or deep floodwater and to follow safety instructions from emergency agencies as further rainfall remains possible.
