Inter Lagos have announced the departure of head coach Shakiru Giwa following the club’s difficult start to the ongoing Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.

The Lagos-based club confirmed Giwa’s exit in a statement published on its official X account on Tuesday, bringing his time in charge to an end.

Giwa becomes the first manager to leave his position in the NPFL this season, as clubs continue to assess their performances in the early stages of the campaign.

Despite his departure, Inter Lagos acknowledged the coach’s contribution to the club, particularly his role in securing promotion from the Nigeria National League (NNL) to the NPFL.

“Coach Giwa has been an important part of the club’s journey, most notably leading Inter Lagos to promotion from the Nigeria National League, NNL, to the Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL,” the club said.

Inter Lagos described the promotion as a significant milestone in its history and thanked Giwa for his dedication and commitment to the team’s progress.

The club also wished the departing manager success in his future coaching career, while noting that his contribution to its promotion to the top flight would remain part of its history.

Giwa’s exit comes as Inter Lagos struggle in their maiden NPFL campaign. The team are yet to record a victory after eight matches, collecting just two points and sitting at the bottom of the league table.

The club will now look to regroup and improve its results as the season progresses, with attention turning to who will take charge following Giwa’s departure.
