Iran Offers to Reopen Strait of Hormuz Within Two Days if US Accepts Its Demands

Iran has said it could reopen the Strait of Hormuz within two days if the United States agrees to its conditions, shortening an earlier proposal that gave Washington a week to meet Tehran’s demands.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said on Monday that the revised timeline demonstrated Tehran’s willingness to pursue a diplomatic solution. He maintained that security could be restored to the strategic waterway and negotiations resumed within a short period if the United States accepted Iran’s terms.

“The possibility of implementing this plan in two days is another indication of Iran’s good-faith approach,” Baqaei said.

He disclosed that messages were being exchanged between both countries through mediators, adding that further progress depended entirely on Washington’s response to Iran’s demands.

Among the conditions Tehran has presented are an end to the Middle East war across all fronts, the release of Iranian assets frozen abroad, the removal of sanctions targeting its oil sector and an end to the US naval blockade of Iranian ports.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also told Al Jazeera in an interview released on Sunday that Washington must accept a new transit arrangement agreed between Iran and Oman for vessels passing through the strait. He further demanded the removal of recently imposed sanctions and a reduction in American military presence in the region.

The Strait of Hormuz has remained a major flashpoint since the Middle East conflict began in late February. Iran has asserted control over the waterway and regularly targets vessels attempting to pass without its authorisation, while the United States has responded by imposing a naval blockade on Iranian ports.

Tehran had initially proposed a seven-day arrangement in September, which it reportedly communicated to Washington through Qatar. Under that proposal, Iran would have reopened the strait on the sixth day after the United States fulfilled its demands.

Tensions have also increased following renewed threats of military action by the United States and Israel. US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he still had one or two targets to address in Iran, including Pickaxe Mountain in central Iran, which Washington suspects may be linked to nuclear activities. Tehran denies that the site is a nuclear facility.

Responding to the threats, Baqaei warned that any military action against Iran would trigger an immediate and comprehensive response.

“Any act of aggression against Iran, any military attack against Iran, by whatever means, will be met with a powerful, immediate and comprehensive response from us,” he said.

Despite the ongoing exchange of messages, there has been no indication in the supplied statements that Washington has accepted Tehran’s conditions. The proposed two-day reopening therefore remains conditional on an agreement between both sides.
