Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters have attacked a Nigerian military base in Kukawa, Borno State, in a coordinated assault that the Nigerian Army says was repelled by troops.
The attack occurred on Tuesday night when the terrorists targeted the 101 Special Forces Battalion from four different directions.
The Army said troops, supported by the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai, successfully repelled the assault and forced the surviving terrorists to retreat.
According to a preliminary assessment by the military, more than 25 ISWAP fighters were neutralised during the encounter, while 14 bodies have so far been recovered.
Troops also recovered six AK-47 rifles and other ammunition following the attack.
The Nigerian Army confirmed that some soldiers were killed during the confrontation but has not officially disclosed the number of military personnel who lost their lives.
However, the Associated Press, citing a senior military officer, reported that 10 Nigerian soldiers were killed in the attack.
The military said further operations are ongoing to track the fleeing terrorists and prevent them from regrouping.
The attack comes amid continued counter-insurgency operations in Borno State, where security forces have been battling ISWAP and other terrorist groups for years.
