Former President Goodluck Jonathan has held a fresh closed-door meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, renewing political interest as Nigeria edges closer to the 2027 general elections.

Jonathan arrived at the State House on Wednesday and was received warmly by President Tinubu, with video clips showing both leaders exchanging greetings before moving into private discussions.

Although the agenda of the meeting was not made public, the engagement is in line with a series of periodic consultations between both men, often linked to regional stability and political developments across West Africa.

The visit comes at a time of heightened political activity nationwide, with parties and key actors already positioning ahead of the next general election cycle.

In recent months, there has been speculation in some political circles about Jonathan’s possible re-entry into electoral politics. However, the former president has not made any official statement confirming such intentions.

Wednesday’s meeting is also the latest in a series of interactions between both leaders. Jonathan last visited the Presidential Villa on November 29, 2025, shortly after being evacuated from Guinea-Bissau during a political crisis while serving as an election observer under the West African Elders Forum.

Since leaving office in 2015, Jonathan has maintained a prominent role in African diplomacy, particularly in election monitoring and conflict mediation across the region, including missions in The Gambia, Mali, and Liberia.

His continued engagement with regional democratic processes has kept him visible in international political discussions, even as attention now shifts to his domestic political relevance ahead of 2027.
