Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus has said he has a “clear conscience” over his reported fallout with captain Cristiano Ronaldo as tensions continue to surround the forward’s departure from the national team camp.

Ronaldo left Portugal’s camp on Wednesday ahead of the UEFA Nations League clash with Denmark, following a disagreement with Jesus over comments made after the coach left him on the bench for Sunday’s match against Norway.

The 41-year-old forward was reportedly unhappy with Jesus’ remarks at the post-match press conference and subsequently departed the squad.

Ronaldo later issued a statement addressing his decision to leave camp, promising to reveal the “truth” behind his departure.

Jesus, however, has indicated that he does not believe he acted improperly in handling the situation.

“I am completely relaxed, with a clear conscience regarding this situation,” Jesus told Sport TV.

The Portuguese coach declined to provide further details for now, saying he would address the matter after the team’s next fixture.

“After Sunday’s match, we will talk about everything,” Jesus said.

The dispute has placed renewed attention on the relationship between Portugal’s coach and Ronaldo, who remains one of the most prominent figures in the national team.

Portugal’s next fixture against Denmark is expected to provide the immediate focus for the squad as the controversy surrounding Ronaldo’s departure continues to develop.
