Former Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has reacted to Cristiano Ronaldo’s decision to retire from international football, saying the Portugal captain’s announcement should be respected.

Ronaldo announced on Thursday that he would no longer represent Portugal, bringing an end to his international career after years of achievements with the national team.

Speaking to journalists on Friday, Mourinho declined to criticise or judge the 41-year-old’s decision, insisting that fans should respect his choice.

“I don’t want to judge him. I think that instead of commenting, we should respect his decision. And obviously, I respect it,” Mourinho said.

The former Manchester United, Chelsea and Real Madrid manager, however, stressed that Ronaldo’s international retirement should not be mistaken for the end of his professional football career.

“This is not retirement. He hasn’t ended his career,” Mourinho added.

He explained that people familiar with Ronaldo understand that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner still has personal and professional ambitions he wants to achieve.

Mourinho also expressed hope that when Ronaldo eventually decides to retire from football completely, the occasion will be different from his announcement about leaving international football.

“The only thing I would wish is that when he eventually retires from football completely, that day will be different from yesterday,” he said.

Ronaldo’s decision marks a new chapter in his career, although he is expected to continue playing at club level as he pursues his remaining ambitions in the game.
