Nigerian Troops Kill Several Terrorists in Zamfara Offensive as Gun Battle Erupts in Shinkafi

A fresh military offensive in Zamfara has left several suspected terrorists dead after troops launched a coordinated assault on multiple hideouts in Shinkafi Local Government Area.

The operation, carried out by troops of the Nigerian Army under the 8 Division alongside the 1 Brigade Combat Team and Tactical Combat Support units, targeted known terrorist enclaves across Kamara, Dan Gwandi, Manawa, and Katsira villages.

According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, the mission began around 9:00 a.m. on May 4, following intelligence on insurgent movements within the area.

The troops encountered resistance at Katsira village, where a fierce exchange of gunfire broke out. Military sources indicate that several of the suspected terrorists were killed during the confrontation.

Despite the gains, the operation came at a cost. Three soldiers sustained gunshot wounds during the clash and are currently receiving treatment.

Under sustained pressure from advancing troops, the remaining fighters reportedly retreated towards the Fakai high ground, abandoning their positions.

“The terrorists were forced to withdraw from the area,” Makama noted, adding that troops have since established control and are continuing pursuit operations to prevent regrouping.

Security forces are now maintaining a strong presence across the affected communities, with ongoing efforts aimed at tracking down fleeing elements and restricting their movement.

The latest offensive underscores the military’s continued push to dismantle armed groups operating in Zamfara, a state that has remained a hotspot for banditry and insurgent attacks.
