The National Universities Commission (NUC) is developing a national artificial intelligence (AI) roadmap and policy framework to guide the adoption of emerging technologies in Nigerian universities.

The Executive Secretary of the commission, Prof. Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, disclosed this on Tuesday in Abuja during the opening of the 2026 NUC retreat for vice-chancellors of Nigerian universities.

Ribadu said artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies were transforming teaching, learning and research, stressing the need for clear policies to guide their integration into the university system.

He noted that the adoption of AI must be supported by adequate staff training, cybersecurity measures, academic integrity standards and data protection safeguards to ensure responsible use of the technology.

The NUC chief also announced new quality assurance measures aimed at strengthening academic standards and improving admission processes. These include post-accreditation monitoring visits, post-matriculation monitoring and carrying-capacity assessments.

According to Ribadu, the commission is also developing accreditation software to improve transparency and regulatory compliance across universities. New guidelines on the award of honorary doctorate degrees are also being prepared, with sanctions planned for institutions that violate the rules.

Speaking at the retreat, the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Said Ahmad, urged university authorities to strengthen accountability in financial management, recruitment, admissions and examinations.

Ahmad emphasised the importance of closer collaboration between the NUC and university managements, saying effective cooperation was necessary to ensure proper policy implementation and measurable improvements across Nigeria’s university system.

The proposed AI roadmap is expected to provide direction for universities as they integrate emerging technologies into academic activities, while the additional monitoring and accreditation measures are intended to reinforce standards and institutional accountability.
