Otti’s Abia Gains NYSC Boost as 8,890 Corps Members Serve Across 17 LGAs

Abia State is attracting growing confidence from National Youth Service Corps members, with 8,890 corps members currently serving across its 17 local government areas amid improvements in security, welfare and public infrastructure.

The figure, disclosed by NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, includes 5,083 female corps members. The high number of women serving in the state was cited as an indication of confidence in Abia’s relative peace and security.

The development comes as Governor Alex Otti’s administration continues to upgrade facilities for corps members. Renovation work is ongoing at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Umunna, Bende, covering hostels and the multipurpose hall, while solar-powered streetlights are also being installed. The state has equally reviewed its allowance for corps members.

Healthcare delivery is another area receiving support from the corps members. The current group includes 53 doctors, 53 pharmacists and 117 nurses, alongside other medical professionals. Their presence is expected to complement the state government’s efforts to improve primary healthcare and restore functionality to renovated health centres.

Otti has also approved the second phase of the renovation of the NYSC camp, signalling continued attention to the conditions under which young Nigerians carry out their mandatory national service.

The NYSC assessment offers a wider measure of the changes taking place in Abia. Beyond roads and other physical projects, issues such as security, youth welfare, healthcare and public service delivery are increasingly shaping how the state is viewed by young Nigerians.

For corps members, those changes could make Abia more than just another posting location. With better facilities, improved welfare and a stronger sense of security, the state is seeking to create an environment where young Nigerians can complete their service year with greater confidence and pursue useful professional opportunities.
