Travellers using Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri may need to adjust their travel plans as the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) proposes a 25-day runway closure for repairs.
The planned closure is tentatively scheduled to begin on October 20, 2026, subject to final confirmation by the authority.
FAAN said sections of the runway had deteriorated, with potholes and extensive surface cracks worsened by recent heavy rainfall. The damage has prompted plans for repairs aimed at improving safety and the airport’s operational capacity.
The proposed work will include pavement repairs, crack treatment, resurfacing and runway extension to accommodate larger aircraft.
According to FAAN, the intervention is intended to improve runway safety ahead of increased passenger traffic during the Christmas travel season, when demand for air travel typically rises.
The proposed 25-day closure could affect passengers travelling to and from Owerri, as well as airlines operating services through the airport. Travellers may need to review their itineraries and make alternative arrangements if flights are disrupted.
FAAN has advised passengers planning to fly through Owerri to contact their airlines for updates on flight schedules and possible changes to travel arrangements.
The authority said it would announce the confirmed closure and reopening dates once the plans had been finalised.
Until an official confirmation is issued, passengers are advised to monitor announcements from FAAN and their airlines before travelling to the airport.
