Patience Ozokwor Reveals Why She Keeps Playing Witches and Wicked Women in Nollywood

Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor, widely known as Mama G, has revealed why she frequently takes on roles as witches, wicked women and other antagonistic characters in Nigerian movies.

Ozokwor said the recurring roles are more than an acting niche for her, describing them as a calling she believes was given to her by God. She made the disclosure during a livestreamed interview with content creator Carter Efe.

The actress said her real-life dislike for injustice, war and conflict makes her approach such characters with particular care. Rather than simply portraying villains, she said she tries to use the roles to communicate the consequences of harmful behaviour.

“I think God gave me that niche. I hate every ill because I don’t like injustice, war, and rancour,” Ozokwor said.

She explained that when she accepts an antagonistic role, she puts considerable effort into the character because she wants audiences to understand where destructive choices can lead. Her performances, she suggested, are designed to make viewers think about the difference between good and bad conduct.

Ozokwor also said people should understand the consequences of their actions, whether they choose to live responsibly or engage in harmful behaviour. For her, the outcome of a person’s choices is an important part of the message behind her characters.

The veteran actress therefore views her villainous roles as a form of social education rather than an endorsement of the behaviour she portrays. Through storytelling, she said, audiences can be shown the dangers of living badly and the rewards of making better choices.

Her explanation offers a different perspective on the “Mama G” characters that have made her one of Nollywood’s most recognisable actresses, showing how she has used even negative roles to deliver moral lessons to viewers.
