Peller Reacts in Shock as Marriage Registrar Explains Bigamy Law During Wedding to Jarvis

Popular Nigerian content creator Habeeb Hamzat, widely known as Peller, has gone viral after expressing surprise at the legal implications of statutory marriage during his wedding ceremony to fellow content creator Amadou Elizabeth Aminata, popularly known as Jarvis.

The couple officially tied the knot in a statutory marriage on Wednesday.

A video from the ceremony, which has since gained traction on social media, captured the moment the marriage registrar explained the legal obligations that come with a statutory marriage.

Addressing the couple before the exchange of vows, the registrar warned that either party could be prosecuted for bigamy if they entered into another statutory marriage while the current one remained valid.

“If any of you goes against the rule, he or she is guilty of an offence called bigamy. It is a punishable offence with a minimum of five years’ imprisonment, with no option of a fine.

“Should I proceed?” the registrar asked.

The explanation appeared to catch Peller off guard, prompting an immediate reaction that left guests laughing.

“This is marriage, love. What concerns love with imprisonment?” the content creator asked in disbelief.

The humorous exchange quickly went viral across social media platforms, with many Nigerians sharing clips of Peller’s reaction and commenting on his apparent surprise at the legal consequences attached to statutory marriage.

Under Nigerian law, bigamy is the act of contracting another statutory marriage while a previous statutory marriage is still legally valid. It is a criminal offence punishable under the country’s laws.
