Peter Obi Calls for Urgent Action Over Conditions at Sokoto IDP Camp

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has called for urgent government action to improve conditions at the Ramin Kura Internally Displaced Persons camp in Sokoto State.

Obi made the call after visiting the camp in Sokoto North Local Government Area during his two-day visit to the state. The camp is currently home to more than 1,000 displaced persons, according to Obi.

He said he was particularly concerned about the makeshift shelters and thatched rooms where displaced families are staying, noting that some rooms accommodate as many as 10 people.

Obi also highlighted inadequate toilet facilities, the absence of a primary healthcare centre and the lack of a basic school for children as some of the challenges confronting residents.

The former Anambra State governor urged the government and relevant agencies to address the immediate needs of the displaced persons while also tackling the insecurity that forced them from their communities.

“I have always insisted that as long as even one Nigerian lives in an IDP camp, we are all internally displaced,” Obi said.

He said temporary accommodation should be made more suitable while efforts are intensified to create the security conditions required for displaced Nigerians to return to their ancestral homes.

Obi said the visit was his 12th visit to an IDP camp in Nigeria and pledged to continue supporting displaced Nigerians.

He also called on political office holders to spend their holidays within the country, arguing that doing so would give them a better understanding of the difficulties faced by vulnerable Nigerians.

Obi attributed the conditions in the camp to what he described as failures to prioritise critical areas of development and urged relevant agencies to provide better facilities and support for the residents.

He concluded by reiterating his call for a “New Nigeria,” saying: “A New Nigeria is POssible and will be OK.”
