Peter Obi, Kwankwaso May Dump NDC if Ambitions Clash With Party Goals – Buhari’s Ex-Aide Bashir Ahmad

Fresh questions have emerged over the long-term future of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) after former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad suggested that the party’s leading figures, Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, could eventually leave if their political expectations are not met.

Ahmad made the remark in a post on X, where he argued that both Obi and Kwankwaso view the NDC largely as a platform for achieving their immediate electoral ambitions rather than a long-term political project.

His comments come at a time when the party is battling internal disagreements following its controversial primary elections and growing concerns about cohesion among key blocs within the rapidly expanding opposition movement.

According to Ahmad, the political calculations of Obi and Kwankwaso may not align with what he believes is the broader vision of the party’s national leader, Seriake Dickson.

He claimed that while Obi and Kwankwaso are focused on winning elections in the near term, Dickson appears to be pursuing a longer political strategy aimed at building a strong national platform that could position him for future presidential ambitions.

“If Obi and Kwankwaso’s expectations are not realised within the party, they will definitely move on to another platform ahead of 2031 for the same reason,” Ahmad wrote.

He further stated that the former governor’s objective is not merely to create a short-term electoral alliance but to establish a sustainable political structure capable of remaining relevant beyond a single election cycle.

“It is obvious that Dickson is only pursuing a long-term political project, not a short-term electoral arrangement,” Ahmad added, suggesting that the party leader’s focus may be on building a formidable platform that could strengthen his prospects for a future presidential bid.

The comments add another dimension to ongoing discussions about the stability of the NDC, which has recently faced internal disputes involving supporters of Peter Obi, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and other influential figures within the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
